Lehman Brothers Holding Company files for bankruptcy in New York City.

The collapse of the investment firm is the largest bankruptcy in history. It prompts the Down Jones Industrial Average to drop over 500 points (more than 4.4%) and precipitates a global financial crisis and deepest recession since the Great Depression.
