Greenbush Commuter Rail Line begins service.

The line runs from South Station to Scituate. It is one of three that follows the route of the former Old Colony line, which was discontinued in 1959. Lines to Middleboro/Lakeville and Plymouth/Kingston opened in 1997. The Greenbush line had been delayed due to lawsuits by residents and municipalities along its path.
