Vieth v. Jubelirer decision upholds the right of state legislatures to gerrymander districts.

April 28, 2004

Supreme Court, by a 5 to 4 margin, upholds the right of the Republican-dominated Pennsylvania state legislature to to redraw the state’s Congressional districts so that their party gained a 12-7 advantage – even though they had previously held only 10 seats to the Democratic party’s 11 and state-wide partisan registration and voting patterns were unchanged.
