Leventhal (Norman B.) Map Center is established.

Located in the McKim Building of the Boston Public library, the center is supported by developer Norman Leventhal, who initially donates maps from his own collection and subsequently $10 million as an endowment, the largest in Boston Public Library history. The center contains some 250,000 maps and atlases, including some of the earliest maps of Boston and the Boston area.
