New England Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans.
February 3, 2002
The Patriots upset the St. Louis Rams 20-17 in the Superdome, as Adam Vinatieri kicks a 48-yard field goal on the final play of the game. On January 19, 2002, the Pats won the American Football League Championship by beating the Oakland Raiders 16-13 in overtime at Foxborough Stadium. In that game, Patriots receiver and East Boston High School graduate Jermaine Wiggins caught 10 passes and Vinatieri kicked a 45-yard-field goal in the snow to tie the game at the end of regulation and a 23-yarder in overtime to win it. More than a million people attend the team’s victory parade in downtown Boston, which includes the first use of duck boats, on February 5, 2002.
