Charles River is rated by the Massachusetts Environmental Protection agency.

The agency gives the Charles River a D environmental rating. However, agency director John DeVillars declares the Charles River will be swimmable within 10 years. The rating is upgraded to a B in 2011. The river is rated as swimmable most days of the year in 2013.
