Federal indictments are issued for three of the most notorious gangsters in Boston.

January 4, 1995

Stephen “the Riflemen” Flemmi is arrested outside Quincy Market the next day and subsequently pleads guilty to 10 murders and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Frank “Cadillac” Salemme is arrested in Florida in August 1995, and, after pleading guilty to eight murders, is released from prison into the witness protection program in 2003. He is subsequently found guilty of another murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2018. James “Whitey” Bulger, who had been warned about the indictments, flees Boston and remains a fugitive until 2011.*
