New England Life II is built.
1991
Architect: Robert A.M. Stern. And Jung/Brannen Associates. It is located at 222 Berkeley Street. Although Boston Globe architecture critic Robert Campbell calls it the best new building in Boston since Rowe’s Wharf, AIA guide authors Susan and Michael Southworth later write that, with the adjacent 500 Boylston Street, it results in “A pair of almost completely unrelated buildings that side-by-side produce architectural indigestion.” Subsequent occupants include Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers.
