Boston Licensing Board cracks down on single-gender social clubs.
June 12, 1987
The board warns all-male and all-female private social clubs that they admit both sexes or risk losing their liquor licenses. After a U.S. Supreme Court supports warning in June 1988, chairperson Andrea Gargiulo declares, “The powerful men who are members will no longer be able to isolate themselves on a personal level from the cultural diversity of the society they rule.” A book about the issue is published in 1995.*
