Federal Highway Act of 1985 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

The bill is passed is passed by a single vote when the U.S. Senate overrides President Regan’s veto. It includes a provision calling for the federal government to assume 90% of the estimated $3 billion cost of the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel (“Big Dig”) projects, which are approved by the Federal Highway Administration in 1991.
