St. Francis House is established.

(Oct.) Founded by the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province, it is located initially in the former Boston Edison building on Tremont Street and soon moves to 39 Boylston Street. The largest homeless day shelter in Massachusetts, it offers shelter, food, and job training to the homeless.
