Downtown Crossing opens.

September 5, 1978

[11/2-MLS] Originally the Washington Street Mall, it is located from 360 to 472 Washington Street. It was created by initially reducing that section of Washington Street to two lanes, then closing it completely to traffic, and by covering the sidewalks with a glass canopies. The Downtown Crossing Association is formed in 1980 to coordinate activities and serve as a liaison with the city government. The glass canopy is removed in 1987.
