Boston Lyric Opera Company is established.

The company’s first production is a performance of Mozart’s Zaide. It performs in the Emerson Majestic Theatre beginning in 1989, at the Shubert Theatre beginning in 1998, and the Boston Opera House beginning in 2016. Stephen Lord is artistic director from 1992 to 2008. He is succeeded by Esther Nelson.
