Chelsea Street Bridge becomes stuck in the open position.
June 5, 1975
After being raised to allow a tanker to pass, the bridge’s counterbalance shifts and locks in position. The bridge remains stuck for a year, prompting residents hold two-days of protests in June 1976. After House Speaker Tip O’Neill helps to acquire federal funds for repairs, the bridge reopens on December 11, 1977. But the bridge gets stuck in the open position again after being struck by another tanker on November 10, 1982, and remains in the open position for months afterwards.
