Democratic presidential nominee Sen. George McGovern (D-S.D.) nearly picks the Boston mayor as his running mate at the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach. But Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) reputedly discourages him from doing so. White later tells aide Mark Shields, “I would have done the same thing to him if I had the chance.”
