Equal Rights Amendment is passed by Congress in Washington, D.C.
March 22, 1972
Although quickly ratified in 35 states, it fails to receive the support in a sufficient number of states for adoption before the deadline set by Congress, initially 1975, expires on June 30, 1982. Illinois and Nevada subsequently ratify the amendment and Virginia becomes the 35th state necessary for adoption on January 15, 2020.
