Heckler (R-Wellesley) defeats Patrick Harrington (D. The first woman from Massachusetts elected to Congress without succeeding her husband, she had defeated longtime Congressman and one-time speaker of the House of Representatives Joseph Martin in the republican primary on September 13, 1966 and becomes one of 11 women in the U.S. House of Representatives at the time. Heckler is reelected five times and defeated for reelection in 1982.*
