In it, the magazine calls Boston, “The maiden aunt of American cities . . . stifling in a cocoon of tradition while other American cities were busy rebuilding, Boston seemed completely bankrupt of ambition, and imagination. Its once teeming port was dead, its downtown decaying, its neighborhoods sliding into squalor. The Brahmin who built Boston had all but abandoned it to the politicians.”
