Jazz Workshop opens.

Operated by Harold Buchhalter and Paul Vallon, it located at 733 Boylston Street. The opening act is the Herb Pomeroy Quintet with guest Stan Getz. Performers include George Benson, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Keith Jarrett, Elvin Jones, Roland Kirk, and Charlie Mingus. The club is purchased by Peter Lane, Tony Mauriello and Fred Taylor in 1966, and closes on April 9, 1978. Explaining his business plan, Taylor later says, “You know how you make money in jazz? You start with $5,000 and you end up with $3,000 . . . You just hope to survive doing something you love.”
