James Meredith is barred from entering the University of Mississippi.

An African-American student, he is refused admission by Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett. President John F. Kennedy subsequently sends federal marshals to escort Meredith onto the campus two days later. He becomes the first African-American graduate of the university on August 18, 1963.
