President John F. Kennedy promotes the U.S. exploration of space in Washington, D.C.

In an address to Congress, Kennedy declares, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the early.” The U.S. achieves the goal in 1969.*
