Self-Help Organization of Charlestown is established.

(May) SHOC is created at a meeting of some 600 people at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Its primary purpose is to respond to proposals to bring urban renewal to the neighborhood, but the group also sponsors neighborhood cleanups and involves itself in zoning issues and the granting of liquor licenses. Leo Baldwin is the first president.
