Opera Company of Boston is established.
1958
[1957] Originally the Boston Opera Group, it is founded by Sarah Caldwell and others and performs its first production, Offenbach’s Voyage to the Moon ,on Boston Common. The company performs at various venues, including the Orpheum Theatre beginning in 1971, then moves to the former Savoy Theatre, subsequently renamed the Opera House, in 1978. The company acquires the building in 1980, and produces a number of American premieres. Financial problems force the company to dissolve in 1990.
