Residents sue to halt the West End urban renewal plan.

August 26, 1958

Twelve West End residents seek a restraining order in Superior Court to prevent the plan from proceeding and their homes from being demolished. In the suit, the plaintiffs claim the eminent domain taking was illegal. The residents’ attorney Albert West calls the plan, “Robin Hood in reverse – taking houses from the poor to provide housing for the rich.” Attorney Lewis Weinstein, representing the city, said the area had been found “sub-standard and decadent.” Judge Charles Rome takes the request for the restraining order under advisement.
