Boston Redevelopment Authority is established.

(Sept.) It located initially in City Hall Annex and Quincy Market. Authorized by the Massachusetts legislature on October 4, 1957, the agency replaces the Boston Housing Authority Development Division as the city’s development authority and the Boston Planning Board in 1960. Kane Simonian is the first executive director. The original board of four members chosen by the mayor and one by the governor includes Joseph Lund, vice president of R.M. Bradley, chairman; Mons. Francis Lally, editor of The Pilot; James Colbert, political editor of the Boston Post; Stephen McCloskey, representing organized labor; and Mel Massucco, photo editor of the Boston Record-American. The agency becomes the Boston Planning and Development Agency in 2016.
