Holt, Will. The World of Will Holt.

April 30, 1957

Recorded by the New York-based folksinger, the album contains “M.T.A. (The Boston Subway Song). Released as a single two months earlier and popularly known as “Charlie on the M.T.A., the song is on its way to becoming a hit, but suddenly dropped from the airwaves because it mentions 1949 mayoral candidate Walter O’Brien Jr., who was accused of being a member of the Communist Party during the Red Scare period in 1955. The song does become a hit, however, when it is revived by the Kingston Trio in 1959 – but only after O’Brien’s name is changed to a fictional character, George O’Brien.
