Boston Herald-Traveler is awarded a television license by the Federal Communications Commission.
April 30, 1957
The last of four commercial television licenses granted in Boston, it leads to creation of WHDH Channel 5. The decision to a allow a newspaper to own and operate a television station in its same market is subsequently appealed, however, and the FCC revokes the license in 1969 (1968). After the decision is upheld by the Supreme Court, the license is granted to another group in 1972.*
