Hurricane Diane strikes Boston.

August 17, 1955

The three-day storm strikes Boston six days after Hurricane Connie struck Boston. It kills 68 people, generates winds of 100 mph, gusts of 135 mph, and causes more than $460 million in damage. In Boston, it drops a record 8.4 inches of rain on the city in a 24-hour period between August 18 and 19 (and 11.91 inches in a 40-hour period-BGL). Low-lying areas of Boston and surrounding towns are flooded. The storm prompts proposals to build a pumping station as part of a New Charles River Dam.
