Rocky Marciano wins the world’s heavyweight boxing championship in Philadelphia.

A Brockton native, Marciano KO’s Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round in Municipal Stadium. He successfully defends the title six times, the last a ninth round knock out of Archie Moore on September 21, 1955. Marciano retires in April 1956, with a record of 49 wins (43 by knockouts) and 0 losses, the only undefeated heavyweight champion in boxing history.
