Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott have their first (blind) date.

February 29, 1952

The two have lunch at Sharaf’s Cafeteria at 187 Massachusetts Avenue on the site of today’s Church Park Apartments. The date was arranged by Mary Powell, a part-time secretary at the Twelfth Baptist Church who, like Scott, is a student at the New England Conservatory of Music. Driving Scott home afterward, King reportedly announces his intention to marry her.
