Bob Rittenburg wins two gold medals in the Amateur Athletic Union championships in New York City.
1951
The Dorchester resident and Boston Latin School senior wins the 60-yard hurdles and the high jump at Madison Square Garden. But he gives the medal he won in the latter event to second-place finisher Bernie Bruce of Boston Trade, who cleared the same height but needed more attempts to do so. Rittenburg tells Bruce, “Take this and give me the silver. I’ve already got a gold from the hurdles.”
