Lewis (Elma) School of Fine Arts is established.

1950

It is located initially at 7 Waumbeck Street. The school becomes part of the newly-formed National Center of Afro-American Artists and moves to 122 Elm Hill Avenue in 1968. The building is damaged by a fire on July 20, 1981, then again in 1984, and the school closes due to financial problems in 1985 [1990].
