Poliomyelitis virus is developed in Boston.

1949

Perfected by Drs. John Enders, Thomas Weller, and Frederick Robbins, it developed at Children’s Hospital Boston. The first successful attempt to grow the poliomyelitis virus in the U.S., its discovery leads to the development of the polio and other vaccines, as well as additional medical and scientific advances. The three men receive the Nobel Prize in 1954.*
