Housing Act of 1949 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

Signed by President Harry Truman, the law contains a pledge by the federal government to to provide a “decent home and a suitable living environment for every American family.” It expands the support for construction of public housing initiated by the 1937 Wagner-Steagall Act and authorizes construction of 810,000 units of public housing nationally.
