Master Highway Plan for the Boston Metropolitan Area.

1948

Massachusetts Department of Public Works. The plan calls for building a series of highways in and around Boston, including a Central Artery through Boston, two circumferential highways, one around Greater Boston that is later called Route 128, and another within Boston that comes to be called the Inner Belt. A proposed Southwest Expressway is added to the plan in 1956. The latter two highways prompt widespread opposition beginning in 1960.*
