Korczak Ziolkowski begins work on the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.

June 3, 1948

The Boston-born sculptor begins what would be more than 30 years of work work on the monument outside Custer. It had been suggested to him by Sioux Chief Henry Standing Bear in 1939. Ziolkowski continues working on it until his death in 1982, and his wife and children continue to work on the project today.
