Boston Manifesto protest is held.
March 21, 1948
Some 300 artists, students, and their supporters protest the recent statement by the Boston Institute of Art at the Old South Meeting House. Led by Karl Zerbe and David Aronson, the group issues its own statement, written by Hyman Bloom, that declares, “By arrogating to itself the privilege of telling artists what art should be, the Institute runs counter to the purpose of this organization.” Institute director James Plaut subsequently apologizes for some of the wording in the original manifesto, explaining that he thought “enjoin” meant “entreat.”
