New England Telephone Company building (third) is built.
1947
Architect: Cram & Ferguson. Designed in the Art Deco style, it is located on the former site of the Perkins School for the Blind at 185 Franklin Street (180 Congress Street). The building includes a mural made up of five 12 x 60 foot panels by Dean Cornwell, installed between 1947 and 1950, that depict the history of the development of the telephone and honor telephone operators. The building is purchased by Commonwealth Ventures in 2008 and renamed 50 Post Office Square. A new exterior glass lobby by Elkus Manfredi Architects is planned.
