John Hynes is appointed acting mayor of Boston.
June 26, 1947
Through special legislation passed by the Massachusetts legislature, Hynes, the City Clerk, serves in place of James Michael Curley, who had been sentenced to prison for mail fraud. Normally, the post would have gone to City Council president John Kelley, but he is under indictment for bribery. Hynes serves as acting mayor until November 28, 1947.*
