Fidelity Investments is established.

Originally Fidelity Management and Research, it is founded by Edward Johnson II and located initially on Congress Street. Johnson is the first chief executive officer. The company is created to advise the Fidelity Fund, a mutual fund formed in Boston in 1940 [1930-DD]. The Johnson family subsequently retains 49% of the private mutual fund and brokerage company, which moves to 82 Devonshire Street in 1976, to 245 Summer Street in 2012, and to the World Trade Center in 2014.
