Boston Red Sox lose in the World Series in St. Louis.

October 15, 1946

The Red Sox lose to Cardinals 4-3 in game 7 of the series, as Enos Slaughter scores from first base on a double by Harry Walker in the 8th inning. Johnny Pesky is subsequently criticized for holding the ball too long before making the relay throw to the plate. But many say that substitute center fielder Leon Culberson, inserted late in the game for the injured Dom DiMaggio, did not get the ball to Pesky quickly enough. Ted Williams hits only five singles and drove in one run in 25 at-bats during the series.
