Ryan (Bob) is born in Trenton, New Jersey.

Bob Ryan graduates from Boston College, begins work as a summer intern at the Boston Globe in September 1968, and becomes the Boston Celtics beat writer in October 1969. He goes on become one of the premiere professional basketball sportswriters in the country. Ryan retires in 2012, but continues to write occasional columns.
