The fire breaks out in the Boston & Maine freight yards at 470 Rutherford Avenue. The largest fire in Charlestown since 1910, it covers 12 acres, destroys 21 freight cars, eight tractor-trailers, numerous sheds, and causes approximately $1.5 million in damages. Another serious fire occurs in the same area in 1962.*
