Williams Shift is first used against Ted Williams.

July 23, 1941

The Red Sox lose to the Chicago White Sox 10-4 at Fenway Park. With the bases empty in the seventh inning, White Sox manager Jimmy Dykes shifts his shortstop to the right side of second base in what Boston Globe sportswriter Gerry Moore describes as a “lopsided manner.” Williams responds by doubling to left field. The strategy is subsequently used to greater effect by Cleveland Indians manager Lou Boudreau during the regular season and by St. Louis Cardinals manager Eddie Dyer in the World Series in 1946.
