Latin Quarter opens.

(Oct.) Originally the Towne Club, it is operated by Lou Walters and located in a former church at 46 Winchester Street that had previously been the site of Club Karnak, a speakeasy and after-hours club. The Latin Quarter quickly becomes Boston’s most popular nightclub. Performers include Louis Armstrong, Pearl Bailey, Josephine Baker, Cab Calloway, Billy Eckstein, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, the Mills Brothers, and Buddy Rich. Walters sells the club to Rocco Palladino in 1952 [gangster Mickey Redmond]. Subsequent performers include Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Eartha Kitt, Al Martino, Frank Sinatra and Tony Vale. The club closes in May 1955 and the building is demolished in January 1958.
