James Michael Curley is defeated in the Boston mayor’s race.

November 2, 1937

Curley’s defeat by the younger Maurice Tobin prompts many to think that his career in politics is over, and Edwin O’Connor subsequently uses the campaign and its outcome for a model in his novel The Last Hurrah. But Curley surprises people by subsequently being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and is again elected mayor in 1945.*
