Jonathan Kozol grows up in Newton, graduates from Harvard College, and becomes a Rhodes Scholar in England. He becomes a substitute fourth grade teacher in the Boston public schools, and is fired in 1965, writes a scathing indictment of the city’s school system in 1967,* and founds a alternative school in 1968.* Kozol goes to become a champion for improving the quality and ending inequality in urban public education across the country.
