Flemmi (Stephen “The Rifleman”) is born in the South End.

The son of Italian immigrants, Stephen Flemmi grows up on East Lenox Street, serves in the U.S. army in Korea and is awarded both the silver and bronze stars. Returning to Boston, he allegedly becomes a “hit man” for both the Italian and Irish mobs. Suspected of planting a bomb in the car of the lawyer of a mob informant, he flees Boston in 1968. After returning in 1972, Flemmi teams with James “Whitey” Bulger in both criminal activities and as an informant for the FBI.
