James Michael Curley is convicted of bribery.
1933
The former mayor, Curley is convicted of accepting a bribe while in office to settle a suit against the city by the owner of a building damaged by construction of the Kenmore Square subway extension. Subsequently fined for the offense, Curley is unable to pay the amount of the fine and the additional court costs. According to one source, thousands of citizens contribute the $35,575 needed to enable him to pay the fine and avoid going to jail. According to David Nasaw, “it has been whispered” that Joseph Kennedy gave Curley the money. (1945?)
