James Michael Curley attends the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

July 1, 1932

Although denied a place in the Massachusetts delegation (which unanimously supported Al Smith), Curley somehow joins the Puerto Rican delegation and, as Alcalde Jaime Miguel Curleo, announces Puerto Rico’s support for Roosevelt. On his return to Boston on July 4, 1932, Curley is met by a crowd of 12,000 at North Station and a crowd of 100,000 – most of whom had come for the annual fireworks display – at Boston Common.
